Lin, born in 1952, was educated at National Chengchi University (MBA 1978), Peking University (MA, Political Economy, 1982), and University of Chicago (PhD in Economics, 1986).

Lin was professor and founding director of the China Center for Economic Research (CCER) at Peking University and professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology until June 2008 when he became the World Bank Chief Economist. His articles have appeared in various academic journals such as American Economic Review and Journal of Political Economy.

Lin is a  member of American Economic Association.
